Type of Leather
The leather is Grade-A cowhide, we have tested many types of leather and have found this to be the most durable while also breaking in well over time to form to your hand.
Tanning Process
The leather used for the mittens and gloves is acquired through markets and purveyors spanning several countries and regions, where our partners have been involved in the trade for over 30+ years. Our partners know leather like we know snow here in Wyoming, and we rely on their experience and expertise to validate and ensure consistent and ethical conditions for the cattle and longevity of their trade and industries that support their families and towns.
To prepare the leather for use, our production partners utilize sunlight, water-based vegetable tanning and a great deal of time - in lieu of more expeditious chemically based methods. The resulting leather, used in constructing the mittens, has distinct color and appearance, as each pair is unique. The time and effort needed to achieve the end result is intentional, as the final product should last for many, many years. Our hope is to create a high quality product that honors the inputs required and reduces the long term material consumption - making a pair of mittens that lasts generations.
